Self-Care as Self-Respect: A Lupus Warrior's Perspective

Living with lupus often means juggling medications, doctor appointments, and symptom management on top of life's everyday demands. It can feel like a part-time job!!

When you're already exhausted from fighting fatigue, joint pain, and unpredictable flares, self-care can feel like yet another overwhelming task on an endless to-do list.

But ... it doesn't have to feel like another job, the goal is to make you feel rejuvenated for all of your other life responsibilities!

Self-care isn't about adding more obligations—it's about showing yourself the respect you deserve. For lupus warriors, this means:

Simple Acts of Self-Respect:

  • Going to bed early when your body signals fatigue

  • Saying "no" to events if they are in the sun all day, don't sound fun or seem too stressful

  • Taking medications on schedule

  • Wearing sun protection even on cloudy days

  • Resting before you're completely depleted

  • Canceling plans when your body needs recovery

  • Spending less time with people that steal your energy or make you feel stressed

Beyond Basic Needs:

  • Setting boundaries with people who don't understand your condition

  • Listening to your body's signals instead of pushing through

  • Choosing gentle movement over intense exercise when needed

  • Allowing yourself to use mobility aids without shame

  • Taking breaks before you hit exhaustion

The truth is, self-care isn't another item on your to-do list—it's the foundation that makes everything else possible. Every time you honor your body's needs, you're showing yourself respect. Every time you acknowledge your limits, you're practicing self-care.

When Basic Tasks Feel Overwhelming:

  • Break them into smaller steps

  • Celebrate tiny victories

  • Accept that some days require more rest

  • Ask for help without guilt

  • Modify activities to match your energy

Remember: Taking care of yourself isn't selfish or indulgent—it's essential. In the complex journey of living with lupus, self-respect means acknowledging your needs and honoring them, even when others might not understand.

Your body is working hard every day. You deserve the same care and respect you give to others. Sometimes the most powerful act of self-care is simply giving yourself permission to put your health first.
