Also known as cognitive dysfunction, brain fog can make daily life feel like you’re navigating through a misty haze. What is Lupus Brain Fog?
Brain fog is that frustrating feeling of not being able to think clearly. It can range from mild forgetfulness to more severe difficulties with concentration and communication. Whether it’s struggling to find the right words in the middle of a conversation or forgetting why you walked into a room, it’s a real and sometimes overwhelming symptom that affects many of us with lupus.

Know and Avoid Your Triggers Everyone's lupus journey is unique, and so are the triggers that can exacerbate brain fog. For some, it might be overexertion, while for others, it could be a lack of sleep or exposure to the sun. Keep a journal of your symptoms and identify patterns—this can help you pinpoint and avoid your personal triggers. Use Memory Aids Don’t be afraid to rely on tools to keep you organized and on track. Whether it’s a to-do list, a daily planner, or setting reminders on your phone, these aids can make a huge difference. One of my favorite strategies is to use a colorful planner and to-do lists! Both not only helps me keep track of my day but also adds a little brightness to my routine!
Prioritize Quality Sleep I know how elusive good sleep can be with lupus, but it’s crucial for managing brain fog. Create a relaxing bedtime routine, limit screen time before bed, and make your sleep environment as comfortable as possible. 🌙
Stay Active and Relax Exercise can improve cognitive function, reduce inflammation, and enhance overall well-being. Gentle activities like yoga, stretching, or a walk in nature can be incredibly beneficial. Pair this with mindfulness practices, like deep breathing or meditation, to keep your mind and body feeling its best.
Be Kind to Yourself Living with lupus isn’t easy, and brain fog can make things even more challenging. It’s important to practice self-compassion. When you’re struggling, remind yourself that it’s okay to have off days. Be patient, and don’t hesitate to ask for support from loved ones. You are doing your best, and that is more than enough! 🌸
