3 Signs You’re Overdue for Changing Your Diet with Lupus

Living with lupus is challenging enough, but when your diet isn't aligned with your body's needs, managing symptoms can become even more difficult. Our diet plays a huge role in controlling inflammation and supporting overall health. If you’re experiencing some of the signs below, it may be time to rethink what you’re eating and make changes that can help you feel better, reduce flares, and reclaim your life.

1. Increased Flares & Fatigue

One of the first signs that your diet may not be supporting your lupus is an increase in flares and constant fatigue. If you find yourself experiencing more frequent or intense lupus flares or you’re feeling exhausted despite getting enough rest, your current eating habits could be contributing to the inflammation.

High-inflammatory foods such as refined carbohydrates, processed foods, and sugary snacks can fuel the fire of chronic inflammation, making lupus symptoms worse. By focusing on anti-inflammatory foods like leafy greens, berries, and omega-3 rich foods, you can help your body calm the storm and regain energy.

What to do: Consider adding more whole foods into your diet, such as vegetables, fruits, healthy fats, and lean proteins, to support your immune system and reduce inflammation.

2. Pain is Getting in the Way of Living Your Life

Joint pain, stiffness, and body aches are common with lupus, but if they’re getting worse and stopping you from doing the things you enjoy, it’s a sign that your diet might not be helping to manage inflammation effectively. When pain becomes a constant companion, it’s time to look at what you’re putting into your body.

Certain foods like sugar, processed meats, and unhealthy fats can increase inflammation and make pain worse. On the other hand, foods rich in antioxidants and omega-3s can help soothe inflammation and reduce pain.

What to do: Incorporating foods such as salmon, flaxseeds, turmeric, and ginger into your diet can provide anti-inflammatory benefits that help ease the pain and improve your quality of life.

3. Your Lab Results Aren’t in the Normal Range

If your lab results show elevated inflammation markers or issues like high cholesterol or poor kidney function, this is a red flag that your current diet may not be doing its job. Your labs provide a snapshot of how well your body is coping with inflammation, and out-of-range numbers often suggest that changes are needed.

Diet plays a crucial role in supporting your immune system and reducing inflammation, so improving your food choices can help normalize those numbers and get your health back on track.
