Spooktacular Tips for a Flare-Free Halloween with Lupus 🎃
Hi Lupus Thrivers 💜,
It’s officially spooky season! 👻 I just finished decorating my front yard (just some hanging ghosts and lots of pumpkins and mums!), and I’ll admit it: I LOVE Halloween. The costumes, the pumpkins, the creativity… what’s not to love?!
But if you’re living with lupus, you know that a night of trick-or-treating or a costume party can come with a few extra tricks of its own. The good news? With a little planning, you can have ALL the treats and none of the frights. Let’s celebrate! 🎉
1️⃣ Pick a Costume That Loves You Back 🧙♀️Costume shopping is one of the most fun parts of the season! Choose costumes that are comfortable, breathable, and easy to move in. Lightweight fabrics and loose-fitting designs are your best friends here. Be careful with masks and headpieces that can cause overheating, and patch-test any face paint or makeup before the big night. Sensitive lupus skin deserves a costume that won’t leave it irritated the next morning!

2️⃣ Layer Up Like a Boss 🧣Depending on where you live, Halloween nights can get CHILLY! If you have Raynaud’s along with your lupus, cold temperatures can hit you extra hard. Wear warm layers under your costume, and cover those fingers and toes with gloves, cozy socks, or even reusable hand warmers. And please, wear comfy shoes! Your joints will thank you after a night of walking and standing. 🙌
3️⃣ Treat Yourself, the Lupus-Friendly Way 🍬Yes, you can still enjoy your favorite candy! Some lupus medications, like prednisone, can raise blood sugar levels, so enjoy those sweets mindfully. Pick your absolute favorites, savor them, and skip the ones you don’t truly love. Then mix in some festive, nourishing snacks like roasted pumpkin seeds 🎃, fruit skewers with “monster” eyes or hummus with veggie sticks. Delicious AND anti-inflammatory? That’s the best kind of treat!
4️⃣ Don’t Let Yourself Become a Skeleton! 💀Between all the running around and sugary snacks, it’s easy to forget about water. But dehydration can make fatigue and other lupus symptoms worse. Bring a water bottle on your trick-or-treat route or keep one nearby at the party, and sip throughout the night to keep your energy up. Don’t let yourself get bone dry! 💧

5️⃣ Pace Yourself and Plan for Rest Breaks 🪑Fatigue is one of the most common lupus symptoms, and Halloween can be a LOT. Listen to your body and take breaks to recharge. Out with your little ones? Plan a shorter route, sit on a curb or in the car while they hit a few houses on a circle drive, or tag-team with another adult. There’s no prize for the longest route. The real win is waking up feeling good tomorrow! ✨
6️⃣ Let Your Crew Know What You Need 💬Your friends and family want you to have fun too! Let them know about any needs or limits you might have, whether that’s a shorter night, a place to sit down, or someone to help carry the candy bag. The right people will be happy to support you so you can enjoy every moment.
7️⃣ Create Your Own Kind of Halloween Magic 🏡If going out isn’t in the cards this year, that’s totally okay! Host a cozy movie night with your favorite cosy, spooky, or scary films, bake a batch of Halloween treats to share later, or get crafty with pumpkin painting and DIY decorations. Some of the best memories are made right at home.
8️⃣ Focus on the Fun! 🎃Halloween is all about creativity and joy. Whether you’re carving pumpkins, decorating your home, or handing out candy in your favorite witch hat, embrace the magic of the season without pushing yourself past your limits. You deserve to enjoy this holiday, warrior!
Living with lupus might mean a few adjustments, but it doesn’t mean missing out. With a little planning, a dash of self-care, and a whole lot of support from your loved ones, you can have a frightfully fabulous Halloween. 🧡
