When living with lupus, making more of your to-do list as simple as possible can save your energy for more fun activities. Here's how to build a closet that serves both your style and health needs.
If you have a lot of sun sensitivity, stocking up on clothing with sun protection built in can be immensely important to preserving your energy for the day.
Sun Protection Essentials:
Lightweight, long-sleeve UPF tops in breathable fabrics - UV Skinz is a popular brand
Wide-brimmed hats with UPF rating - easy to find!
Quality sunglasses with UV protection
Light scarves for neck coverage
Fingerless gloves for hand protection while maintaining your ability to use your fingers easily
Dressing for your comfort!
If you are still experiencing cold weather in early spring, prevent feeling more tired by keeping warm.
Cold Weather Warriors:
Soft, non-irritating sweaters
Thermal underlayers - Uniqlo offers Heattech, 32 degrees can be found at Marshall's and TJ Maxx
Warm gloves with touch-screen capability
Cozy scarves that don't irritate sensitive skin - cotton or fleece can be very soft
Lined boots with good traction - no slips and falls for you!
There are many ways to organize your closet to make your life easier. Marie Kondo suggests picking up your items one by one and ask yourself, "does this bring me joy?"
Organizing for Joy and Simplicity:
Sort clothes by category and season to find cold weather vs. warm weather items faster
Keep frequently-used protective items easily accessible
Create a "flare day" section with loose, comfortable items
Position hats and accessories where they're visible
Use bins, separators and baskets for easy access
Mindful Decluttering Questions:
Does this fabric irritate my skin?
Can I manage the fasteners during joint flares?
Does it provide adequate sun protection?
Do I feel confident wearing this?
Do I feel comfortable wearing this?
If your clothing passes these tests, I would definitely keep in the closet. If it does not, perhaps it's ready to be donated?
Pro Tips:
Install hooks at easy reach for hats and scarves
Use drawer organizers for gloves and sun protection items
Create a "grab and go" section for urgent appointments
Keep a small sun protection kit in each closet section
Pick out your outfit the day before to make mornings easier
Remember: Your wardrobe should support your health journey while reflecting your personal style. Make getting dressed a joy, not a challenge.
