Curating Your Social Media for Self-Care and Positivity

Social media has become an integral part of our daily lives, but it can also have a significant impact on our mental and emotional well-being. A mindful approach to social media can make all the difference in scrolling and feeling more positive, or your time on social media turning into doom-scrolling. Here’s how you can reclaim your feed and turn it into a source of inspiration and joy. Especially with chronic illness, positivity and inspiration can be just what you need after a frustrating day.

Step 1: Declutter Your Feed

Start by spending 20 minutes reviewing the accounts you follow. Ask yourself how each account makes you feel. Does it inspire you? Does it bring you joy? Or does it leave you feeling less-than, unworthy, or overwhelmed?

  • Unfollow Accounts That Don’t Serve You: If an account consistently makes you feel inadequate or unhappy, it’s time to unfollow. Remember, you’re in control of your feed, and it should reflect what uplifts and empowers you. I promise you will be pleasantly surprised by how quickly you forget and move on from old accounts!

  • Mute When Necessary: If unfollowing feels too final, consider muting the account instead. They’ll never know, and you’ll enjoy a lighter, more peaceful feed.

You’ll be amazed at how freeing it feels to remove negativity from your online space!

Step 2: Follow What Inspires You

Once you’ve decluttered your feed, it’s time to fill it with content that uplifts and energizes you. Seek out accounts that align with your interests, hobbies, and values.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Hobbies and Passions: Follow accounts that share tips and tutorials for activities you love, such as reading, exercising, cooking, knitting, crocheting, gardening, or breadmaking. Seeing others share their creativity can inspire you to dive deeper into your hobbies.

  • Positive and Uplifting Content: Look for accounts that promote self-love, body positivity, and mental health awareness. Surrounding yourself with encouraging messages can boost your mood and confidence. There are even accounts with affirmations to boost your day!

  • Educational and Informative Accounts: Follow experts and creators who teach about topics you care about. Whether it’s nutrition, fitness, wellness, or personal growth, learning something new can be empowering.

Step 3: Check In Regularly

Social media is a dynamic space, and your needs may change over time. Make it a habit to periodically review your feed and repeat the unfollow/mute process as needed. This ensures your feed remains a source of joy and inspiration.

Why This Matters

By curating your social media feed, you’re taking a proactive step towards protecting your mental health and well-being. Social media should enhance your life, not detract from it. Surrounding yourself with positive influences can:

  • Reduce feelings of comparison and inadequacy

  • Inspire creativity and motivation

  • Help you connect with supportive communities

  • Create a sense of balance and peace
