Embracing Positivity - How am I supposed to live with Lupus?

Updated: Apr 18

Living with lupus can be a challenging journey, filled with uncertainties and changes.

I certainly felt overwhelmed and NOT AT ALL positive when I was first diagnosed!

You may have felt a range of emotions when you were diagnosed. It's important to pause, acknowledge, and feel all those emotions! Don't rush yourself into toxic positivity and ignore those other emotions.

When you're ready, remember that maintaining a positive mindset can significantly impact your overall well-being. In this post, we'll explore strategies on how to stay positive in the light of a lupus diagnosis and the importance of seeking support when needed.

  1. Educate Yourself: Knowledge is power, and understanding lupus is the first step towards managing it effectively. Take the time to learn about the condition, its symptoms, and treatment options. Empowering yourself with knowledge not only helps demystify lupus but also enables you to actively participate in your healthcare journey.

  2. Focus on Self-Care: Self-care plays a crucial role in managing lupus and maintaining a positive mindset. Pay attention to your body's signals and prioritize activities that promote physical and emotional well-being. Adequate rest, a balanced diet, and gentle exercise can make a huge difference in how you feel

  3. Build a Support System: Facing lupus alone can be overwhelming, and that's why building a strong support system is vital. Share your diagnosis with close friends and family who can offer understanding, empathy, and encouragement. Surrounding yourself with a supportive network can make a significant difference in your emotional well-being. Don't share with someone that is not going to be helpful - you don't have time for that.

  4. Connect with Others: Seeking support from those who have experienced similar challenges can provide a unique perspective. Joining lupus support groups, either in person or online, can create a sense of community and understanding. Connecting with others who share similar experiences fosters a supportive environment where you can exchange advice, share stories, and find inspiration.

5. Communicate Openly with Healthcare Professionals: Effective communication with your healthcare team is so important! Be open about your symptoms, concerns, and any challenges you may be facing. Collaborate with your healthcare professionals to develop a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to your individual needs. If you are not feeling heard, it may be time to find a new doctor.

6. Set Realistic Goals: Living with lupus may require adjustments to your daily routine and expectations. Set realistic goals for yourself, considering your energy levels and limitations. Celebrate small victories, and be kind to yourself when facing setbacks. By setting achievable goals, you can maintain a positive outlook on your journey with lupus. When you wake up, gauge how much energy you have and try to match your activities to the day.

7. Embrace Positivity: Cultivating a positive mindset involves focusing on the aspects of life that bring joy and fulfillment. Engage in activities that you love, whether it's pursuing hobbies, spending time with loved ones, or enjoying the beauty of nature. Embrace positivity by choosing to see the silver lining in every situation. Look for glimmers - little things that can bring you joy or happiness in the day - i.e. a beautiful sunset, a parking spot not too far from the door, catching the green light, be grateful for the small things. You're actually training your brain to focus on the positive!
