Valentine's Love to My Lupies

Updated: Apr 18

Love is in the air, and Valentine's Day is just around the corner! But for those of us living with lupus, celebrating the season of romance and chocolate-covered everything can sometimes feel difficult. Fear not, dear Lupus warriors, for I've got a bouquet of tips to help you embrace the spirit of Valentine's Day!

  1. Choose Your Chocolates Wisely: Ah, chocolate—the quintessential Valentine's Day treat. But did you know that some chocolates may contain high levels of lead, which can be harmful for those with lupus? Fear not, chocolate lovers, for I've got you covered! Head over to my Instagram post (@TheLupusDietitian) for a handy guide to the best chocolate choices—ones that are low in lead and high in deliciousness. Because nothing should stand between you and your chocolate fix!

  2. Get Crafty with Non-Sweet Treats: Who says Valentine's Day has to revolve around sweets? Get creative and think outside the heart-shaped box with non-food treats that are just as sweet. Consider crafting handmade cards or love notes for your loved ones, creating a personalized playlist of their favorite songs, or planning a cozy movie night complete with fluffy blankets and popcorn.

  3. Indulge in Self-Love and Self-Care: Valentine's Day isn't just about celebrating romantic love—it's also the perfect opportunity to show yourself some much-deserved love and care. Treat yourself to a spa day at home, complete with soothing face masks, luxurious bath oils, and your favorite calming playlist. Or indulge in a hobby or activity that brings you joy, whether it's painting, journaling, or simply curling up with a good book and a cup of tea. Remember, loving yourself has to come first!

  4. Plan a Lupus-Friendly Date Night: If you're celebrating with a partner, why not plan a lupus-friendly date night that caters to your unique needs and preferences? Instead of a fancy restaurant dinner, opt for a cozy picnic at home or a romantic candlelit dinner cooked together in the comfort of your own kitchen. Choose activities that are low-impact and enjoyable for both of you, whether it's stargazing under the night sky, taking a leisurely stroll through a park, or simply cuddling up on the couch with a favorite movie.

  5. Spread Love and Awareness: Finally, what better way to celebrate Valentine's Day than by spreading love and raising awareness for Lupus? Share your Lupus journey with friends and loved ones, educate them about the challenges you face, and encourage them to show their support in meaningful ways. Whether it's wearing purple to show solidarity, making a donation to a Lupus research organization, or simply offering a listening ear, every act of kindness helps to spread love and awareness for this important cause.

Happy Valentine's Day, and may your day be filled with love, joy, and plenty of lupus-friendly treats!
